Ocimum tenuifolium (known as Holy basil in English, and Tulasi in Sanskrit), is a well known aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae. Apart from its culinary uses, for which it is known across the world, it is also used as a medicinal plant, and has an important role within many traditions of Hinduism, wherein devotees perform worship involving Tulasi plants or leaves. Native to India, it is a short lived perennial herb or small shrub, often grown as an annual. The foliage is green or purple, strongly scented. Leaves have petioles, and are ovate, up to 5cm long, usually somewhat toothed. Flowers are white, tinged purple, borne in racemes. Its aroma is distinctively different from its close cousin, the Thai Basil which is sometimes wrongly called Holy Basil, in shops and on the internet, but they can be distinguished by their aroma and flavour. Holy Basil is slightly hairy, whereas Thai Basil is smooth and hairless; Holy Basil does not have the strong aniseed or licorice smell of Thai Basil; and Holy Basil has a spicy flavor sometimes compared to cloves. Tulasi’s extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning, and malaria. Traditionally, tulasi is taken in many forms: as an herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf, or mixed with ghee. Essential oil extracted from Karpoora Tulsi is mostly used for medicinal purposes and in herbal toiletry. For centuries, the dried leaves of Tulasi have been mixed with stored grains to repel insects. Recent studies suggest that Tulasi may be a COX-2 inhibitor, like many modern painkillers, due to its significant amount of Eugenol (1-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-allylbenzene). Studies have also shown Tulsi to be effective for diabetes, by reducing blood glucose levels. The same study showed significant reduction in total cholesterol levels with Tulsi. Another study showed that Tulsi's beneficial effect on blood glucose levels is due to its antioxidant properties. Tulasi also shows some promise for protection from radiation poisoning and cataracts. Some Vaishnavites do not use Tulasi for medicine, though, out of reverence. However, the use of Tulsi for purification and as a medicine is widespread throughout India. Many Hindus along with the ancient tradition of Ayurveda believe that the healing properties of sacred herbs such as Tulsi were given by the Lord himself, and can be used as a medicine out of reverence. This plant is also known to increase the body’s mental and physical endurance; it also increases some animals’ tolerance to stressful situations (either physical, biological, chemical, or emotional stress). It has been determined that Tulasi, a medicine based on Ocimum sanctum, possesses both anti-rheumatic but also anti-asthmatic effects. However, this drug (also known under the name of Holy Basil) has proven itself to be an extremely potent and effective anti-stress agent, one that is superior to other plants’ (such as Panax ginseng and Eleuthero coccus) effects. Holy Basil has also exhibited highly potent anti-asthmatic results in various experimental models. The juice obtained of the Ocimum sanctum plant has also other uses, being frequently prescribed to patients suffering from viral infections (due to its highly potent and effective anti-viral results). The juice’s actions are quite simple: this remarkable leaf extract completely inhibits the growth of three Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains that have been tested so far. Holy Basil is known to promote the very optimum respiratory support. This drug (Holy Basil) is also popular for its proven anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and expectorant properties, which have made it more than extremely useful in disorders such as respiratory tract infections. Tulasi has a great effect in the relief of bothersome respiratory stress. Ocimum sanctum has proven itself to be a hairy, herbaceous, erect, much-branched, soft annual plant that has crimson or purple flowers. Ocimum sanctum’s leaves have become extremely important in medicine nowadays because they are known to yield a precious volatile oil that contains eugenol. This substance is commonly used in today’s treatments because it possesses insecticidal and antibacterial properties. Moreover, this plant has much more to offer in the case of patients suffering from diabetes. It has been reported that an aqueous decoction of the entirely dried plant (Ocimum sanctum) has the ability to lower the patient’s blood sugar levels. The juice that is found in the plant’s leaves is known to possess antiperiodic, diaphoretic, expectorant and stimulating properties. This is why the juice that is extracted from the leaves of Ocimum sanctum is also widely prescribed to patients who are suffering from bronchitis and / or catarrh. This drug is also successfully applied to the desired (affected) skin area in diseases such as ringworm or any other cutaneous disorders.
