If you do nothing else while you're here today, please spend a few minutes reviewing this page in its entirety. We believe you'll come away with a better understanding of some of the underlying cause/s of much of the fatigue and tiredness that's affecting far more people today than you could ever imagine.
You'll also discover why many of the products people use to help them overcome constant fatigue or tiredness have been of little benefit.
We've been where you are right now, and we understand firsthand the uncertainty that can accompany not knowing why you're always feeling tired, and the frustration that can result in not being able to do anything about it, no matter what you try. Our goal is to provide you with information we believe will not only make sense to you, but that can also help put you in control of both your energy level and your health again.
There's no way of getting around it. Fatigue is a serious and growing health crisis. FACT: Approximately 60 million Americans today (that's 1 in every 5 Americans) say that they experience fatigue intense enough to interfere with their having a normal life... And that figure may be understated. (Dr. Julie C. Haviland M.D. - St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center - Toledo, Ohio)
There are three separate, but equally significant factors which contribute to much of the constant fatigue people are experiencing. Your ability to clearly understand each of them, and to thereafter act on this knowledge, is paramount in your ability to beat this problem safely, naturally, and permanently.
Did you know that, when you're constantly tired or fatigued, particularly if you eat a nutritionally poor diet with a lot of processed foods (and unfortunately, most of us do - see below)... Your body is, in all likelihood, deficient in many of the essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, as well as naturally occurring carbohydrates that it must have to function at an optimum level... And that's where the problem with constant fatigue and tiredness often begins.
Good carbohydrates vs. bad carbohydrates
For example, did you know that carbohydrates are supposed to be your body's main source of energy? That's right. They're included in many of the foods and liquids we consume. When carbohydrates are broken down by the body, a simple sugar called glucose is produced; glucose is critical to help maintain tissue protein, metabolize fat, and to fuel (energize) your central nervous system.
Glucose is absorbed into your bloodstream through the intestinal wall. Some of this glucose goes straight to work as 'energy' in your brain cells and red blood cells, while the rest makes its way to the liver and muscles, where it is stored as glycogen (animal starch), and to fat cells, where it is stored as fat. Glycogen is your body's auxiliary energy source, tapped and converted back into glucose when you need more energy.
Not only do carbohydrates provide your body with the fuel (energy) it needs for physical activity and for proper organ function, they also deliver essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and a host of important phytonutrients to your body. (Harvard School Of Public Health)
Question: If we get our carbohydrates from the foods we eat, why then are 20% of Americans today - that's 60 million people - experiencing fatigue intense enough to interfere with their having a normal life?
*FACT: Roughly 90% of the money that Americans now spend on food goes to buy nutrient depleted, processed food... Food that is also depleted of our primary energy source - naturally occurring or 'good' carbohydrates - and the essential vitamins, minerals, and other important phytonutrients that naturally occurring carbohydrates contain. (You Are What You Eat by Paul Chek)
Question: So, how do you know if the foods you're eating contain naturally occurring-energy producing carbohydrates (good carbohydrates - the ones your body needs to produce safe-natural energy), or nutrient depleted-processed carbohydrates (bad carbohydrates - the ones that produce either crash and burn energy, or little to no energy at all - empty calorie carbs)?
Your primary sources for naturally occurring or "good" carbohydrates are fruits and vegetables (not canned), along with whole grain products. When it comes to bad carbs, if you see the words bleached, enriched, processed, or refined on the label of a food, it's a pretty safe bet that you're buying a product which contains nutrient depleted, processed carbohydrates.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is little doubt that the human body uses carbohydrates most efficiently for energy production (as opposed to fats and proteins). So there isn't any reason to avoid carbs, even if you're trying to lose weight. However, there is a BIG difference between the natural, wholesome, "good" carbs your body is designed to consume and the unnatural, highly-processed, "refined or bad" carbs so many Americans consume on a daily basis. Just remember - The carbohydrates found in processed and junk foods are a part of the problem, not the solution.
Unfortunately, the problem with much of the fatigue we experience today goes beyond just good carbs vs. bad carbs, and consuming too many processed foods and liquids. It often times includes your body's deficiency in critical antioxidants and a weakened immune system. Here's what we mean.
If you have a diagnosed or undiagnosed health condition such as: chronic or adrenal fatigue, overweight, depression, prolonged stress, fibromyalgia, anemia, diabetes or pre-diabetes, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, chronic pain, a sleeping disorder such as apnea, an auto immune disease, and the list goes on... Chances are, your body is also deficient in critical antioxidants.
When the body is deficient in antioxidants, it usually results in a compromised or weakened immune system. This simply magnifies your fatigue problem. You see, the primary job of antioxidants is to neutralize harmful free radicals in your body. While free radicals are produced by our bodies with almost every activity we perform, they can also attack your body's cells, tissue, and organs. When these free radicals are left unchecked and they damage your cells, these damaged cells become a common pathway to health complications such as premature aging, heart disease, cancer, and a host of other chronic and degenerative diseases, along with their by-products, such as constant fatigue and tiredness.
Studies have also shown that oxidative stress (which causes harmful free radicals in our body) plays a role in the development of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome when the body doesn't have the antioxidants needed to neutralize these free radicals (Fulle et al. 2000; Richards et al. 2000; Logan et al. 2001)
Where does our body get antioxidants from? Some are produced naturally by your body - I.E. glutathione. However, as we age, that production goes down. The other antioxidants our body needs to fight excessive free radicals and toxins come primarily from plant foods: fruits, vegetables, and grains. Just like naturally occurring carbohydrates (the 'good' carbohydrates), naturally occurring antioxidants do not exist in today's processed foods.
FACT: "Processed foods are to blame for the sharp rise in obesity and chronic disease seen around the world." (The World Health Organization - 2005)
The problem of not getting enough naturally occurring antioxidants in our foods is compounded even further because many people have been led to believe the antioxidant supplements they purchase that contain Vitamin A, C, and E are a good substitute for the real thing. As you'll read in the highlighted section below, reality says something completely different.
Not enough naturally occurring carbohydrates in the foods we eat; A deficiency in antioxidants; A weakened immune system... All of these factors contribute to the growing fatigue crisis in America. Unfortunately, there's still one more important factor that also contributes to much of the fatigue millions are experiencing today.
If you're like most people who suffer from constant fatigue or tiredness, you've tried different vitamin and mineral supplements to help increase your energy level. Yet, in all likelihood, you saw very little, if any, long-term improvement. Sounds familiar? But, why did this happen?
Approximately 50% of American adults take a daily vitamin supplement. People in the United States are taking billions of dollars worth of vitamins and minerals with the belief that these supplements are going to keep them healthy and/or give them more energy.
Yet, nearly 1 in every 3 Americans - That's roughly 100 million people - suffers from a chronic illness, which often times includes fatigue or excessive tiredness as a by-product. (cureresearch.com)
